Using School Visitor Tracking To Make Schools Safer

School security has become a paramount concern in some schools. Given the rise of school shootings, kidnapping, and other crimes targeting students, most schools have implemented some form of school visitor tracking in order to ensure the safety of their students. This can mean anything from actually tracking campus visitors to screening them before they are even allowed to step on the campus. Between all of these systems, it is hoped that students will be able to have a safer school year.

Defenses Against the Barbarians

For most schools, tracking visitors come in three phases: screening, limitations, guides. Most visitors to a school campus undergo a basic screening both to determine if they are a legal visitor and to make sure that the person is not breaking any laws just by being there. This means that sex offender sites are consulted as well as other institutions when a person first signs in. The person is also checked to see if they are close relatives; most schools make sure that the parents and any guardians are listed, as well as any relatives not allowed to contact the child in question. Only if they pass this screening are they allowed on campus.

The next phase depends on if they are visiting the child or if they are visiting for other reasons, such as teaching a class or showing up for Career Day. Generally, if the former then the child is called to the office, and the visitor is allowed to talk to the child there. If other issues come up, such as a child needing to leave due to a family emergency, then the person is required to sign off on it. Even if there is just a note, a lunch, or a backpack, the child is usually called directly to the office. If the latter, then the person is taken to the location as needed; basically, the school is not going to allow people to wander its halls.

Basic Defenses Work Best

While all of these are standard features in most schools, the more paranoid schools will issue lanyards that allow a visitor to better tracked and whose color states where they can be to anyone who sees them. A simple defense, sure, but most of the best defenses for schools are simple, and usually work pretty well. Throw in a decent security team and a company helping out its defenses, and a school can use school visitor tracking to make the school safer for everyone.
